no 90 a bend in the river

I have read some books I have never reread.
Not because the books were awful.
Not because the books were lost.
Not because ….

The reason is that the book impressed me so much and gave me such a vivid experience in reading it I fear to read the book a second and a third time.
Maybe at a second reading the magic will have disappeared.
Maybe the book was not as good as I thought at first.
I am sure I have changed over the years and the book stayed the very same book. When I read the book I lived in Kenya. Maybe it is not just the setting of the book but also at the same time my own setting at the time of reading. That collusion of settings is still reverberating.

The book I want to mention has been written by V.S. Naipaul. The title is ‘A bend in the river’. Now this book has reached no 90 on the list of one hundred best novels, published by the British newspaper The Guardian. Number 90: Just outside the top ten.

VS Naipaul, 100 best novels
