secret journeys

I remember watching ‘ A passage to India’ in a cinema in downtown Nairobi. The place was crowded, very crowded. The people behaved as if at a soccermatch. Shouts and cheers and boos and clapping and deep silence and despair and hope. It was visible and audible. When the character Richard Fielding walked out of the English Club because Aziz Ahmed was not allowed in, the crowd broke out in cheers and applause.

The film was based on a book written by E.M. Forster. The South African writer Damon Galgut read the book several times. He decided to trace the steps of Forster and write about the writing of this book. An epic journey for Forster. Damon Galgut tells about the background to his arctic summer.
