simon armitage wins oxford

Wole Soyinka, the Nigerian writer and poet, did not win the election for the Professor of Poetry at Oxford University (United Kingdom). He was clearly beaten by the British poet Simon Armitage.

Five candidates were in for the race. One of them Wole Soyinka. To be in the race at least 50 Oxford graduates had to support a nomination. Present and past student at Oxford were allowed to vote. In all 3,340 votes were cast and Armitage gained 1,221 votes, Wole Soyinka came second with 920 votes, number three had 918 votes.

Simon Armitage: keen to discuss ‘poetry’s relationship with the civilian world’.

  1. Only recently have I discovered the existence of Simon Armitage (because he undertook a long walk, something which interests me) and wrote a post for my blog at http://walkingthederwent.com/2015/06/12/walking-home-the-pennine-way/. And this week I have been made aware of the Walk the Nile project by Lev Wood -again I couldn’t help myself and posted an introduction to this feat: http://walkingthederwent.com/2015/06/22/walking-the-nile-river-in-africa/. It is so interesting that we, as individuals, have our interests, then through the world of blogs we discover new connections.
