alex la guma’s neglected legacy

Sometimes it seems to me that there was no African writing before the days of Chinua Achebe and Ngugi wa Thiong’o. They receive honours and praise.

IOL cw Alex la guma.2But what about the older voices? I have paid attention to Sol T. Plaatje. But what about a man like Alex la Guma (1925 – 1985)? A long forgotten writer. One man want to revive attention for this South African writer. He walked in the night in a stone country. Are there readers who want to walk with him in the night? Who want to live in his stone country?

We pride ourselves in our history, but our memories seem to be short.
