When children do not develop reading habits at an early age  it will be more difficult at a later age to develop these skills. One important factor is the role of parents (both mothers and fathers) who have the opportunity to tell stories, to read from books. But not every parent is in the position to be an example for their children. Poverty and illiteracy can be hindrances.  

In this interview with the executive director Mpuka Radinku (Publisher’s Association of South Africa) on issues connected with functional literacy of children.
